Advancing Open Process Automation for the Oil & Gas Industry

MOGBISS & Nova SMAR Deliver OPAS System at INSTEP

Enabling the Future of Process Control in O&G

The Open Process Automation™ Standard (OPAS), developed by The Open Group, represents a structural shift in industrial control system philosophy — moving away from proprietary, closed Distributed Control Systems (DCS) toward open, interoperable, and vendor-neutral architectures.

For the Oil & Gas sector, where asset lifecycles span decades and system obsolescence risk is significant, OPAS offers strategic advantages:

  • Reduced vendor lock-in

  • Modular hardware and software decoupling

  • Improved lifecycle cost management

  • Enhanced cybersecurity architecture

  • Seamless integration across multi-vendor environments

  • Future-ready scalability for brownfield and greenfield assets

OPAS aligns with the industry’s increasing focus on digital transformation, operational resilience, and long-term asset sustainability.

Strategic Collaboration: MOGBISS & Nova SMAR (Brazil)

MOGBISS Sdn Bhd is proud to be part of the OPAS ecosystem through our principal, Nova SMAR, a Brazil-based global automation technology provider with extensive experience in open system architectures and advanced industrial instrumentation.

Through this strategic partnership, MOGBISS brings:

  • Global OPAS-aligned technology from Nova SMAR

  • Local engineering and integration capability in Malaysia

  • Project execution expertise tailored to PETRONAS and O&G operating environments

  • Technical support and lifecycle service within the region

This collaboration ensures that international innovation in open automation is supported by strong local execution and after-sales capability.

OPAS System Successfully Installed at INSTEP

In December, MOGBISS successfully completed the installation and commissioning of an OPAS-based system at Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP).

The scope included:

  • Deployment of an OPAS-aligned control architecture

  • Integration of modular hardware and open software components

  • System configuration, functional validation, and testing

  • Installation, commissioning, and technical support

This installation provides INSTEP with exposure to next-generation automation architecture, preparing future industry professionals for evolving control system standards within PETRONAS and the broader O&G sector.

The project demonstrates MOGBISS’ capability to:

  • Engineer open, interoperable control systems

  • Integrate multi-vendor automation components

  • Deliver compliant, structured project execution

  • Support PETRONAS’ commitment to technology advancement and talent development

Supporting PETRONAS’ Digital & Automation Roadmap

As PETRONAS and its operating units advance toward more agile, secure, and sustainable operations, open automation platforms such as OPAS present a viable pathway for long-term modernization.

MOGBISS, together with Nova SMAR, is committed to supporting:

  • Brownfield migration strategies

  • Greenfield open architecture deployment

  • Cyber-resilient control environments

  • Lifecycle-optimized automation infrastructure

We look forward to contributing further to the Oil & Gas industry’s transition toward open, standards-based process automation.
